Crafting the Shakuhachi Bamboo Flute of Japan: Demonstration & Performance by Alcvin Ryūzen Ramos

Join us for an intimate evening getting to know all about shakuhachi 尺八 - a bamboo, end-blown flute developed in 16th-century Japan.

Alcvin Ryūzen Ramos is a teacher, performer, and maker of the shakuhachi based out of the Sunshine Coast of BC.

In this workshop, Alcvin will demonstrate each of the steps involved in crafting a shakuhachi bamboo flute, sharing the various tools and techniques used. Guests will learn about the different kinds of shakuhachi and their various applications in music and meditation, as well as experience the instrument played live in the tatami tearoom at SaBi Tea Arts.

About the Educator:

Born and trained in Japan in the classical Zen shakuhachi tradition, Alcvin also studied shakuhachi construction with several of Japan's finest makers. He is currently studying with Miura Ryūho in Akita.  Alcvin lives on the Sunshine Coast of BC, where he teaches and makes shakuhachi flutes and bamboo-inspired jewelry in his workshop in Madeira Park.
