Warming Winter Drinks

Workshop Series with Sen Sakamoto

In this series of three 90-minute interactive lecture workshops, participants will have the opportunity to learn about and try different traditional Japanese warming winter beverages.

Led by Sen Sakamoto of Kintoki Sweets, participants will dive into the history and science behind these seasonal drinks before tasting them and learning how to make them at home. 

Maximum 10 participants per session.

Dōjin Arts Amazake workshop led by Sen Sakamoto of Kintoki Sweets

Sunday December 3: Amazake 甘酒

Learn how to make two types of traditional amazake, a popular hot drink sold at outdoor food stands in the colder seasons.

Amazake is a sweet, low-alcohol beverage made from fermented rice. Participants will learn about the differences between the two main methods of making traditional amazake before getting to try them both for comparison at the workshop!

Time: 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

Dōjin Arts Otoso workshop led by Sen Sakamoto of Kintoki Sweets

Tuesday December 5: Otoso 御屠蘇

Otoso is a special Japanese spiced saké traditionally made and enjoyed in the new year. Participants will learn about the medicinal ingredients incorporated in this beverage, its history, as well as an easy and approachable method to making spiced saké at home to enjoy over the holiday season. 

Time: 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm 

Workshop fee: $36.00


Kuzu-yu workshop with Dōjin Arts led by Sen Sakamoto of Kintoki Sweets

Thursday December 7: Kuzu-yu 葛湯

Kuzu-yu, a type of arrowroot tea, is a favourite cold weather drink with a multitude of variations.

Learn about the properties of kuzu and the popular flavours of kuzu-yu you can make at home. Participants will have a chance to tinker and make their own favourite variations at the workshop to taste and explore.

Time: 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
